Theme of the Year: Egyptian Raqs Sharqi

Egyptian Raqs Sharqi is one of truly authentic styles of Belly Dance. It provides a stable base of skill and knowledge for other authentic styles, for example Turkish Oryantal, as well as to contemporary non-oriental off-springs as American Cabaret, tribal styles etc. Egyptian Raqs Sharqi origins are seen in Middle Eastern folk dances. During the thirties of 20th century, the local Egyptian forms of dance with some balletic movement incorporated were successfully introduced in Cairo variety show venues. Gradual theatricalization, invention, and inspiration helped enrich Egyptian dance in one more branch of an already large family tree of various Raqs.

Samasem of Cairo, Professional Dancer, and Master Teacher

Liza Laziza, Professional Dancer,
and Master Teacher
Samasem Liza Laziza
For most of the past decade and a half, madame Samasem has been one of the Middle East's top oriental dancers. Having performed at all the quality venues, like five star hotels and famous nightclubs, she brings a unique presence on stage. She incorporates everything from modern Arabic pop to traditional, slow orchestrated pieces. She slides easily from elegant classics to playful folklore. Her ear for Arabic music is uncanny, and her subtle isolations catch even the tiniest nuance. Sensuous and slow, she incorporates quick, percussive steps and hip-work seamlessly into the most breathtaking of oriental movements.
Based in Cairo, she has been engaged for extended contracts at all the five star hotels such as the Nile Hilton, Mena House, Meridien Cairo, Seminramis and so forth. Samasem has also regularly performed at the top nightclubs, including such prestigious venues as Cave de Roi, Sun-set and Tivoli as well as the night clubs on Pyramid Street. Her audiences have included dignitaries like the last two presidents of Egypt, the Royal families of Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries. She was working with famous singers like Ehab Tawfiq, Mohammed el-Helw, Ahmed Adawiya and Khaled Agag.
Having gathered and categorized an infinite number of steps and moves, Samasem is a natural dance anthropologist. Her knowledge of steps used by great artists such as Suheir Zaki, Nelly Fouad & Aza Sherif is mesmerizing. She has toured four continents, as both a performer and instructor of Raqs Sharqi, from Japan and Malaysia in the Far East through Europe to America. Samasem's ability to break down the movements, and teach the technical aspect, to be able to execute it with an Egyptian feeling & meaning to the melody – not only the rhythm – has now made her  one of ten most sought-after master-class teacher in Europe and USA. She is known for her warm, down-to-earth personality combined with a wicked sense of humor. Besides being one of main exponents in popular Ahlan Wa Sahlan festival in Cairo, Samasem is well known as Top Star celebrity at many belly dance festivals in Europe, let´s name just Orienta in Germany, festivals in Oslo and Stockholm, Summer festival in Berlin, and Conference of Oriental Dance in the United Kingdom.

Liza Laziza is originally Iranian (Persian) and was brought up in the United Kingdom (London) since she was a child.
Liza has been performing internationally for the past 15 years and has been living and dancing in Cairo for the past 7 years where she performs and teaches.
Liza also travels all over the world for shows and workshops. Liza fell in love with Arabic music when she was at an Arab nightclub in Paris some 20 years ago.
Liza
is a self trained dancer and has worked at five star hotel in the Emirates, Jordan, Tunisia and Syria and  Europe  but when she came to Cairo realised there was so much more to learn and so much more to experience as a dancer.
She trained with a reputable teacher for 3 years which taught her about choreography, discipline and enriched her style even more. Liza believes it is not just the Motion of the dance but the Emotions that are more important, and that understanding the music and its meaning are just as important if not more important than the technique.
Liza has performed for the likes of Prince Charles, George and Barbara Bush, the Bruneis, King and Queen of Malaysia and Ministers and Diplomats and international audiences all over the world. Liza is presently dancing at the Meridian Pyramids hotel in Cairo, also at private corporate functions, private parties and weddings. She is also featured weekly on Egypt TV.
Liza`s style is very oriental and does include all the different styles from Saidi, popular to classical to Khaleegy.
Her passion and love for the dance has kept her in Egypt where she is continuing to live her dream, Liza says she has tried to leave the dance but the dance never left her:
She believes it was her destiny to be a dancer.

Liza is now featured by National Geographic Magazine as No. 2 in Best Dancers in Egypt ranking.

  Orientace 2007

  Topic of the Year: Baladi

In 2007 we have the pleasure to introduce the very authentic dance style in Czech Republic for the first time. Baladi is strongly attached to a social life in Middle East and can be found on most of family celebrations. Originally, it is a folkloric dance, now performed for example by Mahoud Reda Troupe. Baladi was gradually cultivated by many soloists (as Sohair Zaki), in whos sofisticated raqs one can trace baladi maners. Costume is Eastern in grain, there is almost no orientalist-like glitzy hollywood version of BB.
Baladi has stepped in new Millenium in vortex of traditional as well as modern melodies. Sometimes in conservative costume and seriously as a lady in her fifties, and other time dressed up as a coquettish, dazzling, and quarter of a century younger version but always with its typicaly beating baladi heart.
Let yourself be pampered by dazing perfumes of rose and jasmin, and join us to listen to the pulse of Mother Earth. Baladi has reached all continents and found its home in the hearts of many who feel its motherly heart beat: doom doom taka tak....

  Madame Diana, Master Teacher
Diana is French Algerian. She began her dancing career almost 20 years ago in Paris where she performed in many famous nightclubs and for glamorous private parties. She was then invited to dance in Tunisia, Morocco, and the United Arab Emirates at prestigious hotels such as Hilton, Sheraton, and Hyatt. Being a perfectionist, she headed to Egypt to be trained by Raqia Hassan. After spending four successful years performing in Cairo, she realized that she had fallen in love with Egypt, so she decided to make it her home. She has now lived there for over 12 years.
Diana is very musical, and plays on both the melody and the rhythmic elements of the music in her choreographies. Her experiences of Egypt, and her exposure to Egyptian culture through the language and its everyday life, plus an innate knowledge of Arabic music, gives her the essential assets to teach dance to those that are passionate about this art. Diana is also trained in other dance forms, which gives her unquestionable artistic skills.
Her reputation as an original choreographer grows each day. She also gives workshops throughout the world and has trained several professional dancers of international acclaim. Beata and Horacio Cifuentes of Germany have studied with Diana for several seasons. She has choreographed for them on several occasions, and they have incorporated these dances into their fabulous Oriental Fantasy theater productions. Diana teaches regularly at Ahlan Wa Sahlan Festival in Cairo and she just has finished shooting of an instructional DVD with two others dancers.

  Performance

We would like to invite you to Orientace 2007 performance held on Thursday, July 19. 2007.
Performance will be appreciated by an audience who enjoys a broad range of dances.
You will be able to see: brasilian samba, flamenco, Havaiian hula a afrodance. From the Middle Eastern Dance range you can see : ghawazee, melaya luff, egyptian oriental dance, baladi, raqs al assaya, and tabla solo.

The OrientAce performance is a Journey of a dancer around the World. Visiting of all continents will give you the possibility to compare dances from geographically distant places. The dancer has chosen one dance to represent each continent and coupled it with one splendid Egyptian or Middle Eastern dance. She has succeeded in this matching, because, apart from obvious choice based on costume similarities or geographical closeness of the cultures, she chose also pairs of dances where the similarities are due the adoption of some movements is generally known and accepted - as samba and tabla solo - and similarities in a mood of the dance or a purpose of dance. Africa, for example, inspires her to a dynamic ghawazee dance, the older sister of baladi.
The word "Orientace" means orientation in English. Through this performance we would like to help the audience and Czech public to find their bearings in the world of dance as well as in the world of Oriental Dance.

We are sorry to announce that Madame Diana can not take part in the Orientace performance in Prague due to her busy schedule in Cairo. Her part will be filled in by a Czech dancer Amira. Thank you for your understanding.
